What is National Nurses Week?
The origins of National Nurses Week may be traced back to a 1982 congressional resolution and presidential proclamation designating May 6 as National Recognition Day for Nurses.
In 1990, the board of directors of the American Nurses Association extended this to include National Nurses Week. The week’s fixed dates were set in 1993 and will be commemorated formally beginning in 1994.
May 8 is National School Nurses Day, and May 12 is Florence Nightingale’s birthday. May 12 has been recognized as International Nurse Day since 1974.
